Clairsentience and Mediumship: What the Research Says About Clear Feeling, Spirit Communication, and Intuition Development

Clairsentience is one of the most common intuitive abilities people ask about in mediumship, psychic development, and intuitive wellness. In simple terms, clairsentience means “clear feeling.” It is the ability to perceive information through emotion, energy, physical sensation, or a deep intuitive sense.
For many people, clairsentience feels like an intensified form of empathy. It is not always loud or dramatic. It can feel like a sudden emotion, a physical sensation, a quiet knowing, or a strong inner impression that seems to come through the body before the mind fully understands it. In the world of mediumship and spirit communication, clairsentience is often described as one of the ways a medium receives information from spirit.
The word itself comes from “clair,” meaning clear, and “sentience,” meaning feeling. While clairsentience is often discussed in spiritual, psychic, and mediumship settings, it can also be understood as a form of advanced emotional intuition. It sits at the intersection of intuition development, spiritual awareness, energetic sensitivity, and the deeper ways people experience connection.

What Research Says About Mediumship and Psychic Experiences
Researchers have approached mediumship, psychic awareness, and spirit communication in different ways. Some studies have explored whether mediums can receive accurate information under controlled conditions, while others have looked at the personality traits, cognitive patterns, and emotional experiences of people who report mediumistic or intuitive abilities.
Some double-blind tests have produced intriguing results. For example, Delorme et al. (2013) reported that four experienced mediums, when tested blind, each scored above chance on a reading task, with three of them scoring significantly above chance. This suggests that, in that specific setup, the mediums appeared to access meaningful information beyond guessing.
In a follow-up experiment, Delorme et al. (2020) studied both mediums and control participants as they attempted to identify a deceased person’s cause of death from a photograph. In that study, all participants as a group performed better than chance, but the control group outperformed the mediums. The controls also showed stronger brain signals related to attention, which researchers suggested may have reflected greater focus or less inhibition during the task.
To me, this is important because it shows why mediumship research needs to be approached carefully. The evidence is mixed. Some studies suggest above-chance results in certain mediumship readings or psychic testing environments, while other experiments do not show a clear mediumship advantage. That does not mean the topic should be dismissed. It means mediumship, psychic perception, clairsentience, and spirit communication deserve more careful, grounded, and rigorous research.
Mediumship, Intuition, and the Mind
Other research has looked at personality and cognitive traits connected to mediumistic experiences. A large survey by Wahbeh and Radin (2018) found that people reporting mediumistic experiences scored slightly higher on dissociation measures than non-mediums, but both groups stayed well below clinical thresholds. In other words, mediums may be somewhat more daydream-prone, imaginative, or absorbent, but not in a way that suggests pathology.
A 2022 systematic review also found that paranormal beliefs often appear alongside intuitive or holistic thinking, cognitive biases such as confirmation bias, and sometimes weaker analytical reasoning. This does not prove or disprove clairsentience, mediumship, psychic ability, or spirit communication. What it does show is that anyone exploring intuitive wellness or intuition development should stay grounded, reflective, and aware of how the mind works.
That balance matters. Mediumship is not about forcing belief. Psychic awareness is not about ignoring reason. Intuition development works best when curiosity, discernment, and grounded self-awareness are all present together.
Why Clairsentience Often Feels Subtle
Many researchers and practitioners have pointed out that intuitive experiences often happen subtly. They tend to arise when a person is relaxed, open, and receptive rather than when they are trying to force something to happen. Psychology professor Chris Roe has described intuition as being less about making something happen by force and more about noticing information that may already be present.
That idea connects deeply with clairsentience. In mediumship and spirit communication, clear feeling often comes through quietly. It may show up as a feeling in the body, a shift in emotion, a sense of presence, or a sudden inner knowing. This is why clairsentience can be difficult to explain to someone who expects spirit communication to feel like hearing a loud voice or receiving a dramatic message.
Cognitive science also gives us another way to think about this. Antonio Damasio’s somatic marker framework suggests that body feelings can help guide decision-making, especially when we are dealing with uncertainty. In that sense, clairsentience may involve heightened awareness of bodily cues, emotional signals, and intuitive impressions.
Whether someone calls it psychic ability, intuitive wellness, spirit communication, or emotional intuition, the practical lesson is similar: the body often knows before the mind has words for it.
Practical Ways to Develop Clairsentience and Intuition
Whether or not someone uses the word psychic, many people agree that intuition can be developed by learning to notice inner signals more clearly. Clairsentience often begins with paying attention to subtle feelings instead of brushing them off.
One helpful practice is intention setting. Before meditation, prayer, a quiet walk, or a reflective moment, you might set a simple intention such as, “I am open to intuitive insight today.” This creates a grounded focus for intuition development and helps you become more aware of what you are feeling.
Mindfulness can also support clairsentience. Breath-focused meditation, walking in nature, journaling, and sitting quietly with emotion can help strengthen your ability to notice subtle impressions. These practices are not about forcing spirit communication. They are about becoming more present, more receptive, and more aware.
Journaling can be especially helpful. Writing down feelings, dreams, signs from spirit, intuitive impressions, or moments of synchronicity can help you recognize patterns over time. In mediumship and intuitive wellness, patterns matter because they help separate passing thoughts from impressions that feel meaningful and consistent.
Mentorship and community can also be valuable. Lenore Matthews’s work suggests that mediumship can emerge unexpectedly for some people, and that support through sharing, guidance, and community can help people better understand their experiences.
