The Fear Nobody Warned You About

The Fear Nobody Warned You About

It turns up in the bereaved far more often than anyone says out loud.

A man I will call Theo came to see me eight months after his wife died. Details changed, as always.

He did not want to talk about her at first. He wanted to tell me that he had started checking the front door twice, then three times, and that he lay awake doing arithmetic about his own heart. He was fifty-four. He said it felt shameful, as though he had made her death a story about himself.

He had not. What he described is measured often enough to have its own instrument.

A study published on Monday in OMEGA, the Journal of Death and Dying, followed 159 bereaved young adults at three points six months apart. The team, led by Leyi Wang, found that fear of death early on was followed by heavier grief symptoms half a year later, and that heavier grief was followed by less of what they call neutral acceptance, the ordinary sense of death as part of being alive. The arrows ran in both directions, and most of the paths they tested came back empty. It is one sample in one country, and it describes a pattern rather than a cause.

So I am not going to tell you that naming the fear will lift it. I will tell you that most people carrying it have never once written it down in a full sentence.

TEN MINUTES, TONIGHT

Finish this sentence without editing it: since she died, when I think about my own death, what I notice is. Two minutes.

Then sort what you wrote into three piles. Fear, where the dread sits plainly. Avoidance, where you notice you change the subject, including inside your own head. Ordinary, where some part of you registers death as unremarkable. Most people find something in all three at once, which is rather the point.

Now take only the fear pile and make it specific. Not I am afraid of dying, but I am afraid of dying in pain, or I am afraid of my daughter one day doing what I have just done. Write three. Then put the pen down and go to bed.

Nothing on that list has to change for you to be alright tonight. You have only made it legible.

I wrote a longer version, with the seven-day form of this exercise and the places where the researchers openly contradict each other: Fear of Death After Losing a Loved One

With you in it,

Darren

Take the Next Step

If you try the ten minutes tonight, I would love to hear what you found. Just hit reply and tell me one fear you made specific. I read every one.

And if you want to go further, book a session with me. We can sit with what this loss has stirred up about your own life, and what might be waiting underneath the fear. You do not need to have anything figured out first. We start wherever you are.
